You don't want to know about traditional New Zealand wedding customs! (but I will tell you)
[info]kphoebe: Betty, why don't you move to Melbourne?
[info]brown_betty: I understand that Australia is a land entirely peopled with criminals, though, Karen, will I be safe?
[info]kphoebe: Yes. You see, all Australians take an oath on their third birthday to never harm a Canadian.
[info]kphoebe: Then they are ritually struck three times with an orange
[info]brown_betty: Oh, well, that is lucky!
[info]kphoebe: I know! As a New Zealander, I had to perform the Dance of the Severed Wombat to gain the same protection.
[info]kphoebe: Let me tell you, that triple spin float took some mastering.
[info]brown_betty: Not to mention acquiring the wombat, I imagine.
[info]kphoebe: Oh, the wombat is provided.

[We discuss the healthsome benefits of outrageous untruth]

[info]kphoebe: I told Barry's kid that koala bears eat so much eucalyptus oil that they sometimes spontaneously combust, and that's why there are so many bushfires in Australia.
[info]brown_betty: I hope he believed you.
[info]kphoebe: He looked like he was considering believing it for a few seconds, and then Robyn spoiled my fun.
    [info]brown_betty: pfff.
[info]kphoebe: She said something about how I was full of lies.
    [info]brown_betty: A lie right there!
[info]kphoebe: Right! I am full of JELLY.
    [info]brown_betty: And POOP.
[info]kphoebe: More lies! Girls don't poop!
[info]brown_betty: Hahaha! The other day I said "I'm glowing like a pig!" and no one paused to look at me admiringly.
[info]brown_betty: So then I said it several more times, in case they would like to, only they were mid sneeze, or something, and then they looked at me, but the admiration was sort of weak.
    [info]kphoebe: Pft. People today.
    [info]brown_betty: I know!

After my own black, twisted heart.

    Being a child
This morning, I had a memory pop into my head. I don't remember how old I was, but I was pretty young. I was at one of those all-you-can-eat buffets. I think it might have been King's Table. (Doing a quick Google search, I think it may still be around, or may have been revived, but not around here.) I was there with my immediate family and my uncle's family.

Being the big eater I was (not -- I don't think I ate very much as a child), I went for seconds. All by myself! (I guess it really would help to remember how old I was, but I'm really not sure.) I took my plate up to the buffet, and an employee told not to do that. I don't remember her exact words, but I remember enough of it to reconstruct what she must have told me. I think she was telling me not to bring my old plate, but to get a new plate because of health regulations. However, I didn't get that at the time. I just knew that I had done something that I wasn't supposed to do, and I wasn't really sure why, because everyone else was going back for seconds. After all, it was a buffet, and I understood that!

I slunk back to my table without getting seconds. And I can remember how I felt. It wasn't so much that I didn't get to have seconds (though it was that too), but it was that I had done something wrong *and* I didn't even know what I had done wrong. Another child would have asked a parent to get more food, or would have just gone back or whatever. But I carried these things with me. :-)

Anyway, it's nice now both to 1) have better comprehension, and 2) not just take things sitting down when I don't know what was wrong. But the motivation to write this post isn't so much *that* topic as it is about remembering those feelings you have as a child. As a child, I know I thought that adults just didn't *get it*. There were so many things they did that demonstrated they didn't understand us. I know I'm not alone in thinking that. And yet here I am as an adult...acting like an adult. The truth is that it's really hard to remember what it's like to be a child. Oh, we remember the things we did and the things we liked. We remember some of the things that upset us too. But watching adults interact with children, it's clear that in many ways, we don't really remember. Even if we did, it doesn't mean that we'd give in to what the children want (after all, there is plenty that adults know and understand that *children* don't get -- like responsibility, overall health and safety, etc.), but if we remembered it'd be easier to relate to them.

That's why I'm so impressed when I read certain children's books where the adult author really shows that he or she (usually she) remembers what it's like to be a child. And I'm impressed by any adult who can remember. It's easy to not remember -- in many ways we run away from such frustrating, helpless times. But being able to recall and draw from those experiences is very helpful...and wonderful and amazing too.

For my part, I’m planning to ask them about the odious immigration bill that was recently reported back from select committee. It would allow immigration decisions to be made on the basis of secret evidence. This must be particularly disturbing for recent Muslim immigrants, who could be deported on the basis of someone else’s assumptions about their religious and political beliefs, in a country that doesn’t have a great track record on understanding the first thing about what Muslims believe.

    Waiata
Waiata are frequently performed as part of formal occasions, including official meetings on marae. If government people are consulting with iwi, its a good idea to know  a few general purpose waiata.  Fortunately most New Zealanders learn at least a couple  at primary school . Hands up everyone who knows Tutira mai nga iwi. This disreputable mob for a start.

    Strange day
It was a really odd day at work today. Things always go awry when there isn't much work on, because we start trying to find things to do....

8am saw me on my hands and knees in a 40ft shipping container with a torch, brush + shovel and vacuum cleaner. It took me an HOUR to carefully sweep and vacuum up all the tiny little bits of linseed that were lurking in the grain of the wood on the floor. AN HOUR. FUCK. Still, I guess we should be thankful that NZ's border control is so good and MAF care so much about bits of linseed. AN HOUR.

12pm saw me 7m in the air fixing the racking, and simultaneously texting [info]whoknew44 annoying lost positives. I'm still alive and still intact.

2pm saw me dashing for the bathroom and vomiting because my workmate shot a bird in the warehouse with an air rifle. It didn't die another workmate took it outside in a box and stamped on it. Cue more vomiting. Fuckssake. Okay, I realise we don't want birds in the warehouse eating the stock, but really.....

3pm saw me pick up a bee from the ground in the middle of the yard, rush it to the cafeteria and sit it on my hand feeding it sugar water until it was strong enough to fly away. I got SO much shit from my workmates for that, but now the boss's wife thinks I should be a veterinarian. Craziness! I've been rescuing bees all my life and never really thought that much of it, but now everyone thinks I'm crazy :|

    And, that's about it.

    Free movie queue software
I'm looking for some free software (preferably online) which allows me to track movies I'd like to see (and mark them as viewed once I've seen them). Basically, I want what Netflix provides, except I don't want to be a Netflix customer and I'm not asking for any movies. Just the software to track the movies.

I tried searching for such a thing, but I'm not finding it. I figure such a thing has to exist. But does it?

The longest, most beautiful walk yet!
My legs are killing me! Yesterday Alex and I walked about 25km, half of which was straight up the Port Hills. We managed to make it to the Summit Rd, then back down the Rapaki track and home again in just under four hours.
Sometimes I HATE that I take New Zealand scenery for granted. It's absolutely gorgeous and I'm a dumbass for forgetting that. I got some awesome pictures of the scenery, typical kiwi culture and some of the randomness that Christchurch has to offer...

    Unexpected....
Last night Alex and I watched Have No Fear - The Life of Pope John Paul II on ShineTV, the Christian channel. It was REALLY good. I think that whoever made it did a fantastic job. I cried at the end, surprise surprise. I'm also very glad that we decided to watch that instead of First Daughter starring Katie Holmes. I caught the last ten minutes and it made me want to vomit. Also, I read so many gossip magazines that it's weird to see the people I read about actually MOVING on screen.

    poos night
So I went to an old school friends birthday tonight. Her restaurant of choice coyotes.
Then after dinner her friends coerce her to go to the new bar in town, the biggest bar in NZ. because OMG it's so awesome!!!
So I was dragged to temperance,to rugby heaven, and my hell.
feeling far too sober, it was only polite of me to accept the drinks given, do a return round and then make my excuses to leave. That's 30 minutes of my life I'm never getting back. Then the trawl back through coutenay. ewww...
On the way home I get a phone call form a very drunk boyfriend and have to buy him sober-up-pies.
bow I'm just watching 28 days later on tv. and admiring it as a fine fine film

    Enchanted and Rock Band
I watched Enchanted last night. It was a simple but very enjoyable movie. Very good for what it was supposed to be.

I played Rock Band for the first time in a long time (maybe a couple months?). I sucked it up the first couple songs, but then I kind of remembered what I was doing. Kind of.

I just had the best time with Bon Bon.
He sat on my arm while I read LJ and let me scratch his head very slowly and nicely. It was so serene and special. It's raining outside, big fat, icy splodges of eww.
Inside were we all snug as bugs, slightly tired and mellow.
Usually he is a beaky boy and nips me for 'not doing it right' but this time he wanted me to go slow and i slowly rubbed each feather the wrong way, getting a sneaky peak at his skin underneath and the marvellous colours, folds and wrinkles around his neck and ears.
Even, for the first time I managed to massage his earholes and make him yawn. This was a favourite trick I used to do with the bird we had when I was a kid. It was so funny watching Bon Bon trying to figure out what was happening.
It was nice to have bonding time with him.

OKAY SO YOU GUYS if you like any or combinations of the following things, I recommend you pick up Ink and Steel, by Elizabeth Bear:

    - Faerie.

    - Arthurian legends, particularly the bits where Morgana Le Fay is badass or gets a poor rap and you think she deserves a better go.

    - Elizabethan England.

    especially Elizabethan drama.

especially Will of Stratford and Kit Marlowe and bold Ben Jonson and their rash and absurdly talented fellows.

especially if you have ever done the bit where you go "who the hell *was* he writing all those sonnets to, and why are the first 17 kind of rubbish?"

    - Intrigue! and Conspiracy! and Magic!

    - love stories, particularly the ones with multiple love(r)s and complex motivations and the recognition that love does not absolve all sins, but oh, it makes some of them so much easier to commit.

    - Lucifer, Prince of Hell, totally hitting on a playwright by making quips about God's arsehole I am serious it is awesome.

Oh, it's so good. So very, very good. It strikes me I forgot to mention "tightly plotted, witty and beautifully written, with complex characterisation and astonishing audacity", but then it strikes me that, well, I mentioned it was by Elizabeth Bear.

    Almost eight-ender
We almost had an eight-ender thrown against today. I didn't want to be on the losing end of that. For a baseball comparison, it's kind of like having a no-hitter thrown against you – you get to be part of history, but it's not really in a way that you want. But ultimately, we only gave up one point in that end, and we went on to win (barely). So it's kind of like almost getting no-hit, but breaking up the no-hitter barely and going on to win the game.

    Kind of like that.
